Focused Land Management Training for Underserved landowners. This is a research project that's going on and that's initiated by Dr. Rory Fraser from Alabama A & M University. This research investigates ways to engage underserved landowners to maintain their land and sustain natural resources by developing a model of applied forest management training. 20 workshops are being conducted in 10 states in the Southeast.

HVIP - Hardwood Value Improvement Project - OFA is the project coordinator for a 32-state project to train log buckers how to critically evaluate tree "stems" before bucking them in order to get the most value out of them. Landowners could benefit from this as well, to help them maximize the return on their woodlot. "Call Before you Cut" - Ohio DNR, Division of Forestry program that encourages landowners to consult a professional forester prior to conducting a harvest.

There is an interesting Cal Poly study that shows the current regarding costs associated with regulation and harvest plan development and how California forestry regulations compare with FSC standards.

Massachusetts has completed an initial FSC audit for its "current use" tax program and Forest Stewardship Program - 5,000 members owning 350,000 acres - audit cost $70,000 and additional program upgrades which will improve forestry - are estimated to cost about $300,000 per year.
